THE FIRST INVERSION |

In the First Inversion of a Common Chord either the Root or the Fifth may be doubled (used twice).
To recapitulate, we give below the Positions of the Chord of C, and the various ways in which the First Inversion may be written. |

At the Chords marked X it will be noted that the doubling is in unison, both parts or voices taking the same tone. One often sees this in hymn tunes or in other music for four voices. |
